(SEATTLE July 28, 2009) The day after an all-time record heatwave - driving on Interstate 90 with writer Eric Scigliano. I handed him my camera and without thinking, he snaps this quintessential road picture.

No goal in sight, no turns. Straight ahead in fast moving traffic.
Human civilization knows exactly what must be done to mitigate global warming. We must stop putting greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. It means stopping the combustion of carbon fuels that give off carbon dioxide. Fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.
It is very much like we are on a freeway of fast moving traffic with few exits in sight. The view up ahead is disturbing because it is not clear.
We should be on a highway with more exits, with more appealing destinations. Time to move in a totally new direction.
”We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.” -C.S. Lewis
